Magistero tecnico, swing, cuore palpitante sono i tratti caratteristici di questo cofanetto, che di Lee Konitz. L'intento è quello di scavare dentro le radici ritmico-armoniche per infondervi una nuova luce. Soprattutto la rivisitazione delle ballad è fonte di emozioni forti, che si rinnovano ad ogni ascolto.

Sin dal disco omonimo, in trio con il suo mentore Aldo Romano e Jean-Francois Jenny-Clark, si dispiega una lectio magistralis su musicalità e interplay. Da parte del leader, non ci sono tracce di divismo e nemmeno quella muscolarità virtuosistica che avrebbe contrassegnato i dischi successivi. Qui è il pathos a emergere, grazie ad armonizzazioni sontuose con poetiche costruzioni melodiche. Il brano che apre il cofanetto è istruttivo per capire perché Petrucciani abbia lasciato un segno indelebile nel mondo del jazz. Lo illumina la quintessenza della raffinatezza armonica e della tecnica sopraffina. Un fraseggio sinuoso, rende significativa ogni nota nel segno della raffinatezza d'eloquio. Nel 1999 il pianista è scomparso, ma non questi dischi che renderanno più luminosa la nostra vita. Unica pecca del cofanetto, l'assenza di Date with Time," suo esordio discografico nel 1981 a diciannove anni.
